Derek's Herbal One Weight Loss Challenge - 981. Free FM

I haven’t really had a weight problem.  I have remained fairly active but I find that as i get older, my body doesn’t process fats and starches as efficiently.  It means I have to either eat less or find new ways to burn it off.  I have done neither.

Now, I am as heavy as I have ever been and I’m not happy with huffing and wheezing as I bend over to tie my shoes.  I don’t like my jeans being really tight.  Plain and simple,  I know I can do better.  It’s time to make some changes.  “If I always do what I have always done, I’ll always get what I always got.”

If this sounds familiar to you, please follow this page as I document my progress, my struggles and my setbacks. If you have your own story to tell, please let me know here.

Thpring hasth thprung, the flab hasth gone. I wonder what the end goal is?

Well, the end goal is still a way off, but I’m down another 2 pounds at my last weigh in! It’s going the right way. The warmer weather has me looking a a pile of shorts that I may just be able to get into again! I’m in better shape for summer activities than I was a couple of months ago. Think how much better gas mileage I’ll get on my motorbike too! (grin)

All positive things i’m enjoying now that there’s less of me to enjoy it, er, I’ll be enjoying it more, er, something!

March 14, 2012

OK… the third of my bike shows has come and gone. That’s only critical to this blog because the previous two shows finished with me down a couple of pounds each. I had planned my meals and packed fruit, protein bars and other snacks to keep me from going off the rails when I got a food craving. Leading into this most recent show, I was busy and stressed. I didn’t prepare my food plans as well and found myself scarfing down some show food.

It could have been worse, I only gained a quarter pound overall, but it was a far cry from where I would have been if I had been as diligent as I needed to be about my food planning.

The consultants at Herbal One never wag their fingers when I go off course. I am reminded that I need to be mindful that I am attempting to lock in a new lifestyle and if I want to see the results, I need to make the change. If I stumble along the way, it’s not the program’s fault, it’s the guy who is not following it.

If I am to be accountable for the success of my new lifestyle, I need to be accountable when there are bumps in the road. It’s really quite simple… but it’s not always easy!

My net loss is still holding around 21 pounds! (Don’t offer me chocolate!)

March 8, 2012

It seems I’ve all but hit a wall. At one of my recent weigh-ins I found that I had gained a pound and a bit and then by the next one, I had gone back down again. My net loss stands at 21 pounds.
It’s certainly going the right way but, like many things, I want it gone NOW!

The folks at Herbal One are telling me that fluctuations are normal and that I need not be discouraged. I just need to stay the course.

Like the week before holidays or a boring meeting, sometimes things don’t go as fast a we like. I guess I’ll just keep at it! (Have I mentioned how much better I feel?)

The halfway mark is a milestone, right? My goal is to drop about 41 pounds and, as of my last weigh in, I have dropped 20 pounds. I think they’re onto something.

Again, it’s not a “diet” I’m on, as much as a lifestyle change. That means planning my eating BEFORE I get to the point of hunger that will see me cram anything avauilable in my face. I am learning to eat better food and to eat more often to keep “fuel in the engine”, as opposed to letting it run out before I feed it.

My blood sugars don’t fluctuate as wildly. And look! It’s working! Yay me!

February 13, 2012

Last weekend was the second of three bike shows that I run. The disruption in hours and schedule is no excuse for my food intake patterns. It’s all in the planning.

There was a day and a half of set up for the show and two and a half actual days of show. That’s a fair bit of disruption, given the number of times a person eats in a day! But I found that it required some advance planning. I carried fruit, protein bars, nuts and other snacking foods. Much to my surprise, the staff decided to have a pot luck during the show. There were veggies, fruit as well as soups, chilli and stew. Anyway, I wasn’t 100% in keeping with my new plan, but I did eat moderately, as I’m getting used to. The net result after this week’s weigh-in? I’m down another 4 pounds! The girls at Herbal One tell me that because my metabolic rate has been improved, my weigh loss continued!

On the Sunday morning of the show, I noticed I felt a little shakey, like you get after 3 coffees and no food. Upon examining my intake from the day before, I found that I was lacking some carbs, so I adjusted it and felt better. The thing about paying more attention to how I have felt is that I’m more aware of the smaller changes in myself. I like what i feel so far!

The whole process of going through a lifestyle change is a bumpy road with the occasional hiccup! That’s why I’m finding the support of the staff at Herbal One most helpful!

On my Monday morning weigh in and consult, I mentioned that I felt hungry on Sunday (Super Bowl Sunday, as it turns out!) We reviewed my eating ‘diary’ for the weekend and the answer became obvious. I had a very busy Saturday and, it turns out, I didn’t eat all of the food I was supposed to. (It happens in my world!) On Sunday, my body was telling me that it was running low on fuel. The burbles in my stomach were saying “feed me”. I didn’t cave to the hunger pangs, but I thought it was worthy of saying something. Glad I did!

It still isn’t ‘second nature’ to reach for the better food choices, but that’s why this is a process! It’s coming!
